THE VINEYARD
Located on the historic slopes of the Gallipoli peninsula, the Kavur Vineyards span over 24 hectares of land. The vineyards geography benefits from winds blowing in from the Marmara and Aegean Seas. The clay soil which is rich in limestone, magnesium and iron make an ideal terrain for wine production. The total of 65,000 vines planted on site consist of 75% Merlot, 20% a selection of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Viognier. The grape varieties are grafted on different rootstocks according to the micro-parcels. No additional water supply is used besides the natural rainfall thus the vintage each year offers a distinctive ‘‘millésime.’’
THE WINERY
The winery, at a proximity of 13km to the vineyard, is situated at Evreşe in the Gulf of Saros. Both the winery and the wine cellar were constructed using local stones that naturally regulate humidity and temperature. This architectural set-up also allows the wines to be produced in the ‘‘gravitaire’’ method, without the use of pumps. The grapes are carefully hand-picked, selected and transported to the winery. They are then separated from their stems and transferred into thermo-regulated, stainless steel tanks. After maceration and fermentation, various wines are left to rest in a selection of French and European oak barrels.
Gali is a naturally produced wine, with no additives used to alter the aroma or taste. Our wines are unfiltered and unpressed.
HISTORY – GALLIPOLI
Interesting Facts
In Greek, Gallipoli means ‘‘beautiful city,’’ while Gali alone means ‘’beautiful.’’ In the Ottoman language, Gali meant ‘‘precious, valuable and extending beyond the limit.’’
The Gallipoli peninsula is located in the southern part of East Thrace, the European part of Turkey, in between the Aegean Sea and the Dardanelles.
The Anzac Cove was where the Gallipoli Campaign took place during WW1.
‘‘Anzac Day’’ in the aftermath of the war, remains to be the most significant commemoration of military casualties and veterans in Australia and New Zealand. On site at the Kavur Vineyards, shelters from the WW2 period are still intact.
The Lysimachus Coin, depicting the Lysimaschus Lion is visible on the label of all Gali wines. Lysimachia, the ancient city built by King Lysimachus, is only a few kilometers away from our vineyards. According to the legends, Lysimachus produced this coin in the memory of his beloved friend Alexandre who had proceeded him on the throne. Alexandre’s face is printed on one side of the coin and the Lysimachus Lion on the other side. The Lysimaschus Coin is considered to be the first coin in history to have a human portrait printed on it.
